Can't believe that Day 40 is actually over! We are so so proud of you all! What an incredible experience this has been - We've all lost weight, but even more importantly, we have all started moving our bodies toward total physical renewal. We have formed healthy habits that will, hopefully, continue. This is not the end, but just the beginning. Day 41 starts our continued, daily journey toward health for life!! We may not be accountable to each other on a blog from here on out, but we are still in this race together - with and for each other! Love you all!

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Hebrews 12:1

Hello all, I am still here, just having trouble getting here to post. All is well and going good. Today I had a bowl of cut up strawberries and a blueberry smoothie for breakfast, a garden salad with chicken strips for lunch and not sure what supper will be. I have lost almost 12 pounds and its really going well. I am still pretty much sticking to Phase 1, I really want to keep the weight loss up and I get scared to change. Sometimes I have and orange here and there or a sweet potatoe occationally. Feel really good, and my digestive system is really improved so much. Take care and keep up the great work. Cindy Hello all

Hey everyone. So sorry I have missed some days, I have a hard time getting on the computer. Its a fight at night to share it with my kids. So I may have to work on this during the day, when I am able. All is well, and I am still losing some weight. This morning I jumped on the scales and it showed a loss of 2 more pounds, yeah. I am so thrilled. Thats a total of 9 pounds in two weeks. Wooo. Yeah. I am nervous about beginning Phase 2, the weight is coming off on Phase 1 and I am scared to change. What to do. This morning I had a Blueberry and Kefir Smoothie, for lunch I had a mixed greens salad and chicken strips on top. Lots of water and I am snaking on strawberries and almonds. Have a great night. And great job everyone, I love reading your post. Take care. Love to you all.

They are good sources of fat-soluble vitamins A and D as well as certain carotenoids that guard against free-radical damage to the body. They also contain lutein, which has been shown to prevent age-related macular degeneration. When possible, buy eggs directly from farms where the chickens are allowed to roam free and eat their natural diet, or purchase eggs marked DHA or high omega-3 eggs (they contain a healthy balance of omega-3 to omega-6). Despite the unfounded cholesterol scare during the past 15 years, eggs can be a healthy addition to anyone's diet; they can actually help reduce the risk of both heart disease and cancer.

Love and Prayers

Yeah, its going great

I am so encouraged, I got on the scales and I have lost 2 pounds, not alot, but hey, I am so encouraged. This keeps me going. . . . I have done really well, staying focused and doing exactly like I should. Sorry I didn't post last night, I did well yesterday, taking my lunch with me to MC Donalds, with the children (daycare) I was so encouraged to be full on cucumbers, carrots, strawberries, almonds and cherries. WOW, its so good, and I am doing well with planning. I am feeling so much better, headache is gone and body aches, much better. Today went really well too, I had a Kefir Smoothie with blueberries (I had this yesterday too) and lunch was a salad and chicken breast, strawberries and cherries. Snacks were cucumber sticks and almonds. Dinner was a hamburger pattie, tomatoe slices, and green beans, I feel so good about this life change. Thanks so much for the prayers, they are truely working. I am sure praying for all of you too, way to go. Keep on going. Love you all.

Understanding The Three I's

"The Maker's Diet 40-Day Health Experience is designed to attack the three i's - insulin, infection and inflammation. By balancing insulin, you can improve physical, mental and emotional health. In turn you balance blood sugar, which will sharpen concentration and enhance your mood. By reducing infection, you lessen the toxic burden placed on your body during its daily contact with germs. By lessening inflammation, you can reduce aches and pains and decrease risk factors for such diseases and heart disease and cancer. By attacking the three i's, you can improve appearance and enhance energy, and you can begin to reverse the process of accelerated aging and live life the way you were meant to live it."

- The Maker's Diet

Diane and Phillip - Day 6

Breakfast - Kefir smoothie with blueberries and raspberries
Lunch - blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and almonds (Diane)
Tuna and carrots (Phillip)
Dinner - roast beef, squash, zuccini, salad, peas
Snack - celery

Phillip's mom added her contribution to dinner - homemade potato soup, cornbread, and strawberry cobbler - which be tactfully (I hope) avoided eating. Thank goodness Rob ate with us and he chowed down on those things. She will probably never get it straight so we just have to try to cook for her instead of her cooking for us. (She had planned to fix pork chops but thankfully the roast was already cooking!) At 80 years old there's no changing her cooking habits - breaded and fried is all she knows!

Blessings!

On Saturday, I had eggs scrambled this time, usually I have had them boiled, and I had some turkey bacon and grapefruit slices, for lunch I had another chicken breast and lettuce and tomatoe and my first ever Kefir smoothie, yum, its great. For dinner, more chicken and green beans and strawberries. Snacks were almonds and cherries. Today I had another great Smoothie with Kefir and blueberries, great, and turkey bacon, and for lunch turkey slices and soup at church, a little corn and potatoes were in it, upps, I tried really hard to avoid. For dinner, my family forced me to pick up Pizza Hut, so they could watch the carolina game, I did, and avoided it totally. I had turkey slices with goats milk cheese, strawberries, grapefruit and blueberries. YUM. I hope I am doing this right, tomorrow I will get on the scales. Pray hard for me. Blessings to you all. Frequently Asked Question

Why can't we start with the easiest phase (Phase 3) first and ease into these dietary changes?

The order of the phases was designed to be the most beneficial in helping your body reduce insulin sensitivity and balance the omega 3/omega 6 fatty acid ratio. These roles are vital in balancing levels of inflammation and enhancing the health of our immune system which will reduce the chances of infection. In order to get the greatest benefit from this 40-day experience, a "clean break" from a previous lifestyle and diet is required. If we think that by easing into the program we will be more successful, we are only kidding ourselves. One's best chance for success is to break free from food addictions and cut out and add specific foods as planned out in each phase. In fact, many people say that their favorite phase is the first one, because it is the most extreme change with the most extreme results including loss of body fat, decreased pains, and increased energy.

Gotta Love Phase One! :)

P.S. - Cravings are a very normal part of your body detoxing! Drink lots of water and push through! You can will the cravings battle!

Diane - Day 3

If I wasn't encouraged before I definitely am today - I have lost 4 pounds! That Klondike bar doesn't sound the least bit inticing now.

Breakfast - 1 1/2 boiled eggs, 1/2 grapefruit
Lunch - lettuce wrap with sliced turkey and roast beef and a little Greek salad (leftovers from a school function, and I avoided the pizza that was also free for the taking!!)
Dinner - grilled tilipia with asparagus and tossed salad (at Flat Rock Grill- yummy!)
Snack - fresh blue berries, raspberries and almonds

Lots of water and a 25 minute Turbo Jam workout (that's probably responsible for a pound at least)

Phillip has done pretty well for breakfast and dinner again but got a little off track with lunch. He did do the turbo jam workout with me after I cut off Law and Order and put the video in. He is making a renewed commitment to stay on track for day 4 (and I will be home to keep closer tabs on him!)

It is exciting to see how well everyone is doing - keep it up!!

On to Day 4!

Friday, January 5, 2007

Weeeeee are the champions, myyy frieeeeennds!

Wow! Everybody is doing so good! I'm seriously impressed! : )

My day started a bit chaotic! Babysitting four crazy little kids and trying to stick to a diet is tough! No time to make and egg, wash berries and, a smoothie?...forget it! Mom had ladies over for a Bible study and they all brought food, so thankfully I was able to eat a little bit of breakfast casserole, avoiding the sausage, and a few berries. By the way...over dinner Dad shared with us the details of a pig's digestive system. 'Nuf said. : /

By lunch time, I was going crazy for some good food! I had a scathingly brilliant idea...Stick House Grille! (for those of you who aren't familiar with this new local eatery, it's a great little place on Merrimon - where subway used to be - and there's one on Biltmore Ave. too!) I jumped in the car and ran out for carry-out! Teriyki chicken shishkabobs and a cucumber/tomato salad hit the spot!

We were all ready for a big dinner, so steak at Cheddars it was! Confession...Dad wasn't the only one who had a few chips and salsa! ; )

A bowl full of berries and a little bit of Mom & Dad's smoothie made a yummy late night snack, and that was my day!

Crazy For Kefir!

Hey All -

Welcome to Day 3! It is so helpful and inspirational to read how you are succeeding each and every day. As part of the 40-Day plan, many of you are discovering Kefir for the first time - and maybe it is taking a little getting used to (I love your honesty, Whit!). Kefir is absolutely delicious, especially in smoothies, as many of us "smoothie addicts" can attest to! Here are a few things to keep in mind....

1) Always shake the kefir well before using - this cuts down on any "clumpiness"
2) Make sure that you check the expiration date on the bottle and buy one that is not due to expire for a while. A sour smell may mean it is hitting up against the expiration date.
3) Though plain kefir is technically healthier, many companies are now flavoring the flavored kefir naturally. These flavored kefirs taste much better in a smoothie! Lifeway is a good, naturally flavored brand. Just be sure to check your labels and stay away from anything that sounds artificial!!

Also thought you guys might like to know some of the health benefits of consuming kefir regularly, as spelled out in The Maker's Diet:

  • It provides calcium that builds bone in children, and it helps prevent or slow the development of osteoporosis .
  • It lowers high blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • It soothes stomach linings irritated from medication or harsh foods.
  • It prevents dental cavities and chronic bronchitis.
  • It stops the growth of some cancers, including colon cancer.
  • It boosts mental alertness and energy.

Of course, organic, full-fat, unpasteurized kefir accomplishes all of these things best, but is virtually impossible to find at the grocery store. Good brands like Lifeway run a close second though, and taste delicious!! Enjoy those smoothies!

Love to you all!

Whitney's Second Day...

Yeeehawww! Day 2!

Breakfast was rushed so I had a small salad of berries and cranberry juice.

Lunch appointment again so I ordered a marinated chicken breast and had the salad bar. When they brought my chicken, it was accompanied by a heaping pile of hot, crispy french fries! Those are allowed, right?? Ahaha! Don't worry...I resisted! : ) Instead, my salad was full of yummy veggies...lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, banana peppers, a bit of boiled egg, and I tossed on a few chickpeas too even though I wasn't sure where they fell on our "to eat or not to eat" list. Topped with just a little Italian dressing, this was a nice side to my chicken breast.

Mom, Alex and I made a yummy smoothie for an afternoon snack. Strawberries, blueberries, and keifer. I have to say though, that the keifer came out a little chunky and smelled sour. I'm assuming that it's supposed to be that way, just not one of those things I'm used to yet. It was pretty decent though and I had some almonds as well.

Chicken for dinner...again. This time with a little BBQ sauce for flava'. Sauteed squash, zucchini, peppers and onions.

Went to a movie after dinner and coughed up $3.50 for bottled water : ( and that was pretty much Day 2!

I feel like I'm on one of those reality shows and everyone is watching my life for the next two weeks! It's great! Haha! Really though, none of us could do this alone!

Goodnight and good luck! ; ) Whitney

Day 2 - Diane and Phillip

Another good day for me - the Klondike bars didn't call to me as loudly tonight! God is faithful and knowing that we are doing this together is a big help.

Breakfast - 1/2 grapefruit, cup of fresh blueberries, raspberries and almonds

Lunch - salad with a slice of deli turkey and roast beef

Dinner - grilled chicken breast, steamed vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and celery) and tossed salad

Snack - raw celery, carrots and almonds

Drank lots of water!

I rode the exercise bike for 20 minutes tonight.

Phillip has been having a little trouble remembering the foods to avoid. He had the same thing as me for breakfast and dinner and for lunch he had cheese, crackers and an apple. We will work more over the weekend on learning the program. He was too absorbed in Law and Order to exercise or check out this blog spot - maybe tomorrow!

It feels good to be doing the right things - we can do this! God bless!

Dedy -- Made it through Day 2!

Made it through Day 2 without too much trouble. For breakfast I had two eggs scrambled and water. For lunch I just had carrots, in the car, because I was on the run. Afternoon snack was a handful of almonds and for dinner I had a chopped sirlion patty with mushrooms, onions, and zuccini. For a late snack I made a strawberry and blueberry smoothie with peach kefer and a spoonful of flaxseed oil and honey. It was delicious. I think I am becoming addicted to smoothies.
Let's keep up the good work on Day 3.
Oh, Jen and Brian, I even bought some ground bison today. Haven't eaten it yet, though.

Brian and Jen - Day 2

Hey Everyone!!

Congratulations on making it through Day 2! I am so glad to see that everyone has been able to get online and post. Hope you are really getting into the swing of things now! Feeling better already? Here's how we did today:

Breakfast - 2 eggs and turkey bacon with fresh carrot/lemon/lime/grapefruit juice
Lunch - Smoothie and "crock pot" chicken
Dinner - Lentil soup with lamb sausage & salad
Snack - Almonds
Exercise - Approx. 3 mile walk in the Park

Hope you all have had a great day. Some detox symptoms may start to kick in during the next few days - like headaches, a little fatigue, or strong cravings. This is normal as your body goes through withdrawal from all of the bad stuff, on its way to better health. Let's all push through. The other side is amazing. As the Maker's Diet says, "When you avoid consuming certain foods and chemicals that you were addicted to (such as sugar, artificial sweeteners, caffeine and preservatives), you may experience temporary withdrawal symptoms... This 'detox reaction,' as it is sometimes called, is an indication that the program is working and is usually short lived. Make sure you increase your water intake..." You may not feel this at all - it depends on your body's level of addiction to dangerous foods. We felt the cravings and fatigue some the first time through the 40 Days, but it passes quickly and you are so much better off when your body has cleansed itself!! No pain, no gain... or loss, in this case :) Again, the detox reaction may not be an issue for many of you, but wanted you to be ready to conquer it, just in case!

You guys are awesome and I am thrilled with how well we are all doing!! Here's to a good Day 3!

Breakfast..... 2 Eggs
Lunch........... Time of Fasting
Dinner..........Tilapia, Spinach, Carrots
Exercise.......Walked Trail at Beaver Lake

Love and Prayers to all of you!

Cindy - Yeah, I am doing it

Well, I am doing it and its great. This morning I woke up and prayed really hard, that God would help me thru this, and I know He will. I am so thrilled. And I am excited to have you all to help me, and maybe in turn, I can help you too. Prayer is so powerful and I know we are all in on this, knowing God wants us to succeed. This morning I had 3 boiled eggs, and a whole grapefruit, with water, lots of it, to drink. I snacked on almonds all morning, and for lunch I had a grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots. Then some cherries too. They were so good, love them. Tonight for dinner, still not sure, I will be on the go, picking up kids from practice, and delivering some to practice, so it will be dinner on the go, as usual, thats part of my problem, always eatting out. Anyway, hope you all had a great day. I love reading your posts, this is great.

Diane and Phillip - Day 1

We survived the first day - even though unhealthy Christmas goodies are still lying around tempting us! For breakfast I had a blueberry/raspberry/kefer smoothie and 1/3 grapefruit. Carrots, celery and grape tomatoes helped me make it to my lunch of a salad with two slices of left-over london broil. I had an afternoon snack of a handful of almonds. After work I had a church budget meeting with dinner brought in from Subway by one of our members. I had asked for a salad with a chicken breast but he forgot the chicken so it was a pretty measley(sp) salad and after 3 1/2 hours of struggling with church finances I was pretty hungry. Since it was 10 PM when I got home I fought the urge to grab a Klondike bar and went to bed after doing about five minutes of sit-ups and leg lifts etc. I hope to do better with the exercise today since I can actually go home after work. I also drank about 100 ounces of water! It was a good day and it felt good to have overcome the temptation both at work (pecan pie and homemade cookies) and at home! Your prayers have given me the strength so keep it up. Based on what he told me, Phillip stayed pretty much on track also but he didn't give me all the details so I will try to get that for you tomorrow. And maybe I can get our home computer set up tonight so that he can do his own report which would be a huge step for him too!God bless and I trust you will all have a healthy eating day today also!

P.S. - Does anyone else have a headache today? Maybe it's sinus, but could be "carb withdrawal" after the overdose during the holidays! Have a blessed and happy day!

day 1

day 1. it was more like day .5 for me!

no breakfast.

lunch out so i opted for a garden salad with grilled chicken; half way through, i realized it had cheese...the real stuff, from cows that is. oh, and there were croutons. i just realized that. strikes one and two.

later this afternoon, i found myself raiding the kitchen, as is my typical afternoon practice. that was strike three. i was out.

fifteen minutes, two twizlers, and a york peppermint pattie later, i decided to make a fresh start!

dinner was yummy. talapia, asparagus, broccoli, and carrots. water to drink.

after church snack consisted of two eggs, and a strawberry smoothie. no goat's milk, so i used bessie's, and i did add a banana (it was rotting and that's just how i like 'em and i didn't want it to draw fruit flies).

tomorrow's a brand new day! aren't ya thankful for those? : )

Jimmy and Tracey - Day 1

Okay, guys, we've had a great first day! We are excited about looking hot on the beach this summer. I'm getting a speedo and Tracey's wearing an itsy, bitsy, teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini!

Okay...all that's a joke of course!

Seriously, it's been pretty easy today. We had eggs with salsa for breakfast, grilled chicken breast for lunch and tilapia for dinner with asparagus. During the day we snacked on carrots and almonds. Tonight after church I had a little egg snack with some berries.

Boy are we stuffed!!

Talk to you all tomorrow!

DAY 1 - LET'S GET STARTED!

Welcome to the Healthy In 2007 Blogspot! You have made a decision to take back your health and return your body to it's ideal weight - and today is the first day of that journey! Here's what you need to do to get started:

1) Make sure you have the groceries you need to support your decision - Refer to The Maker's Diet section on "Foods to Enjoy" and "Foods to Avoid" in Phase 1. Also, clean up your environment. Removing foods that can sabatoge your commitment removes much of the temptation to indulge.

2) You should have access to post to this blogspot. Come here every day to record what you have eaten - and see what everyone else has eaten! Here is an example of how your posting should look:

Name -
Breakfast -
Lunch -
Dinner -
Snack -
Exercise -
Notes/Comments -

3) Pick up a copy of The Maker's Diet and/or The Great Physician's RX, if you haven't already. Refer to the "40 Day Health Experience" section of the book to give you the day to day information you need for success. Also begin reading the book through so you understand the importance of consuming only the foods God intended. When you understand the "why" of health and proper weight, the "what" is not that hard.

4) Visit The Maker's Diet website. It has lots of information and tools to help you.

5) Solidify your commitment to yourself and to those in this with you to be honest and accountable as we work together to return our bodies to health!

Looking forward to being on this journey with you all! Believe me - At the end of 40 days, you will look and feel better than you ever thought possible. Can't wait to see the results!

- Jen
